9 Effective Quality Improvement Techniques

In today’s increasingly competitive business world, the importance of product and service quality is more important than ever. Quality improvement tools are methods used to improve an organization’s processes or to measure and increase quality. Quality management provides customer satisfaction, increases the efficiency of businesses, reduces costs and helps sustainable growth. These tools proactively identify potential problems, and analyze and optimise processes.

Commonly Used Quality Improvement Tools

Pareto Analysis

Pareto analysis is used to identify the causes of a problem and rank them according to their importance. This analysis system argues that 80% of the problems are caused by 20% of the causes.

6 Sigma

6 sigma uses statistical methods to reduce error rates in processes and increase their efficiency. It makes data-based calculations with DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve and control) methodology. As a result of these calculations, it organises and improves performances.

Control Charts

Control charts collect real-time, quantitative or qualitative data on a theme (process, defect, goods used, etc.) in a systematic, specific and simple format.  The purpose of this data collection is to record the frequency of the specified event and can be used in decision-making processes because it is organised in such a way that it can be understood at a glance.

5S Methodology

5S is an approach to organising workspaces and improving efficiency, first developed in Japan. It adopts the steps of sorting, organising, cleaning, standardisation and discipline, each word starting with the letter ‘S’. This approach argues that a clean and collective working environment will reduce waste and variability.

PDCA Cycle

PDCA (plan, do, control, take action) cycle defines the understanding of continuous improvement and quality management in itself. As a result of these practices, it is aimed to concentrate on process efficiency and targets. With continuous improvement, in fact, quality standards remain consistently high.

FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis

FMEA deals with the determination of possible error types and effects in products or processes. Errors are prevented before they turn into an obstacle and if they occur, they are called studies that raise awareness against the damage they will cause.

Histograms

Histogram is a very useful technique that shows the distribution of variable data and helps to understand it better. It is a type of graph that shows the data distribution and the amount of variation by visualising the statistically followed process outputs in a meaningful way.

Fishbone Diagram

Fishbone diagram, also known as Ishikawa diagram, is used to analyse the causes and consequences of an effect, a problem in terms of its shape. The main causes are categorised and visualised and provide employees with an overview of the issue. Cause and effect diagrams can be used not only in quality improvement but also on continuous improvement issues.

Benchmarking

Benchmarking is a process in which success is measured and compared with similar companies and organizations to analyze whether there are any gaps in best practices and performance levels.

These tools are each of different importance for quality development and continuous improvements. Continuous improvement of quality helps businesses to increase their effectiveness and provide sustainable customer satisfaction.
