What is the 5S Method in Working Life?

5S is one of the methods used to increase workplace efficiency and eliminate waste. Definition of 5S Method

5S is a management strategy that originated in Japan. What Are the 5S Steps?

Originating in Japan, 5S is an easy-to-understand workplace organization technique that relies on visual organization to continually improve processes. The five elements of the 5S are: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke.

1. Seiri (Sort)

The first step of the 5S process is “seiri” which means “order”. The purpose of this stage is to clear the space by removing the unnecessary and unnecessary things in the space, and eliminating clutter. It is very important to review all the content to determine which ones are necessary and which are unnecessary.

2. Seiton (Set In Order)

In the second step, there must be a designated place for tools and parts and they must be placed properly for ease of use. All tools in the workplace should be organized so that employees facilitate their tasks. For example, it is to be placed in ergonomic positions that will not require much effort to reach the materials that the employees need.

3. Seiso (Shine, Cleaning)

This phase includes regular cleaning and arranging of each area. This includes cleaning the work area or maintaining equipment.

4. Seiketsu (Standardize)

This is the stage where you perform the first 3 steps and set the rules for how and when the tasks are to be done. This includes establishing a standard for both the company and its business processes.

5. Shitsuka (Sustain)

This step includes implementing the first 4 Ss, assigning responsibilities, following them, and conducting audits to maintain discipline.
